The case of Eugenia Falleni, the ‘man-woman’ killer, is a case of truth being stranger than fiction. In 1917, Falleni, a woman masquerading as a man named Harry Crawford, murdered her ‘wife’ when she feared her true gender was about to be exposed. Police did not catch up with Falleni/Crawford for another three years – incredibly, she continued to live as a man and had married another woman. Eugenia Falleni proclaimed her innocence, but never explained what induced her to live as a man. Just how she was able to satisfy two wives that ‘she was a he’ has fascinated us for almost a century.
